In his previous feature THE NOBODIES, Jay Burleson built a poignant faux-documentary gut-punch around a perfect facsimile of a zero budget SOV 90s horror movie. That film showed a deep understanding of and empathy for "outsider" artists, people who share their art with the world and are deeply wounded by its rejection. His latest project is arguably even more ambitious, a pair of feature films that look toward different eras and styles of genre cinema past. THE THIRD SATURDAY IN OCTOBER is just as uncanny a replica of late 70s/early 80s regional horror films as the fictional "Pumpkin" of THE NOBODIES was to 90s SOV movies. Burleson applies directorial and editorial techniques from HALLOWEEN knock-offs (like the adorable DEATH SCREAMS) and more outré indies of the time (imagine if all the time spent with characters in ANOTHER SON OF SAM actually made them endearing) to create the convincing illusion of a horror movie created by a bunch of small town friends who just wanted to see themselves on the local drive-in screen. And who probably had no idea their fun little project might spawn a franchise running at least five entries! The result is a charming period slasher with tons of heart, complete with a fantastic cast, impeccable production design, some great original songs, and an appropriately chilly but cozy autumnal vibe. In other words, it's not hard to imagine THE THIRD SATURDAY IN OCTOBER becoming a new Halloween favorite, with horror fans putting it on homemade double features with THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK or THE DORM THAT DRIPPED BLOOD. Or, of course, THE THIRD SATURDAY IN OCTOBER PART V. - Jason Coffman
