A tale of dirt, soap, and magic set in a cult on a remote Greek island.
A PURE PLACE is an offbeat coming-of-age tale about two young siblings engulfed in a secret community obsessed with soap, located on a remote Greek island. Award-winning director Nikias Chryssos (DER BUNKER) follows up on his success with the story of a young and feverish boy named Paul who must challenge the obsessive community that surrounds him in order to free his sister from the nefarious conspirations of the cult leader, Fust (Sam Louwyck). Funny, bizarre, poetic and tender, A PURE PLACE is a tale about love, rebellion and what it means to be actually clean. Shot by Yoshi Heimrath (WE ARE YOUNG. WE ARE STRONG, BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ) and scored by European Film Award Winner John Gürtler (SYSTEM CRASHER, SPACE DOGS). With support by Cinéfondation du Festival de Cannes, Sources 2 and Locarno Open Doors.

Nikias Chryssos made a splash on the film fest circuit with his debut feature DER BUNKER, seeming to fit in with a growing movement of Greek filmmakers like Yorgos Lanthimos and Athina Rachel Tsangari. But there was also something a bit reminiscent of John Waters in DER BUNKER that set Chryssos apart from those contemporaries. A PURE PLACE, his follow-up feature, stakes territory further afield while retaining that puckish streak but tying it to a more emotionally affecting core. In some ways this is a companion piece to that previous film, but with a wider scope and a larger cast led by three fantastic performances by Greta Bohacek and Claude Heinrich as young siblings and Sam Louwyck as the cult leader/soap magnate on whose island the children find themselves trapped. Tragic but also poignant and very funny, A PURE PLACE is a brilliant piece of filmmaking and confirms Chryssos as a filmmaker to watch. - Jason Coffman
